Summary
The recruitment of prominent researcher Luke Metz to Meta’s Superintelligence Labs signals an intensifying corporate race toward Artificial General Intelligence and beyond. This move highlights the centralization of frontier AI talent within major labs pursuing 'superintelligence', a pursuit carrying significant existential risk implications if safety protocols do not scale with capabilities. As Meta accelerates its development of advanced models under Alexandr Wang, the movement of top-tier personnel from OpenAI underscores the competitive pressure that often sidelines long-term safety considerations in favor of rapid capability gains.

Prominent artificial intelligence (AI) researcher Luke Metz has joined Superintelligence Labs at Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META, XETRA:FB2A, SIX:FB), the social media and technology company.
Metz starts at Meta this week and will report directly to Alexandr Wang, who heads the company's artificial intelligence development efforts.
The artificial intelligence unit overseen by Wang has debuted a number of new models for the company in recent months.
Metz is the latest leading researcher to jump between multiple rival frontier laboratories as part of the ongoing artificial intelligence talent wars.
The researcher previously left artificial intelligence firm OpenAI in 2024 to join Thinking Machines, an organization led by Mira Murati.
Metz had rejoined OpenAI earlier this year before deciding to move to Meta for his new role.
The appointment represents the latest major hire for Meta, which has maintained an active recruitment spree across the technology sector.
Meta launched that spree after paying billions in a deal with Scale AI that allowed Wang, its former chief executive officer, to join the company.
Metz's hiring was noted on social media platform X by poster ArfurGrok, who has accurately highlighted a number of recent artificial intelligence personnel moves.
A source familiar with the matter confirmed the appointment to Axios, the digital news organization.
