Description

We find out why some AI researchers are concerned about the future of AI.

Summary

This report highlights warnings from prominent AI researchers regarding the existential threat posed by superintelligence. It features concerns from former OpenAI and Anthropic employees who claim that frontier labs are developing highly capable systems without adequate control frameworks or safety plans. The article specifically references the 'p(doom)' estimates of safety leaders and the collective call for government-mandated guardrails signed by over 1,300 industry employees. Its focus on the lack of current programming methods to ensure safe behavior in future AI systems directly addresses catastrophic risk reduction within a prominent Australian public broadcasting context.

ShareFacebookX (formerly Twitter)AI WARNINGThere's been some big news from the world of AI, as some experts reckon it could lead to the end of humanity as we know it! See, it all kicked off with a post from this guy, Jacob Coxon, saying he quit working with Open AI and Anthropic because he claims the companies are developing super intelligence without any plan for if things start getting out of hand. Then, Evan, who's currently in charge of keeping Anthropic's AI safe, agreed, and even said he reckons there's a 10% chance of humanity being in trouble within the next decade, followed by another post from an Anthropic colleague, Samuel, saying they can't really program AI the way they want. These guys also say that AI isn't a threat right now, in its current form, but what they're concerned about is the future if more rules and safety measures aren't put in place. That's something more than 1300 employees from multiple AI companies agreed in a statement to the U.S government signed in July. Open AI and Anthropic say they agree more guardrails are needed, and they're improving their own safety efforts in the meantime.SUNSCREEN LAWSUITSunscreen is making news once again, with the manufacturer behind 20 recalled products being sued in Federal Court. Last year we told you about 20 sunscreens pulled from shelves after a big investigation found a bunch of SPF ratings were lower than advertised. All of them used the same base formula made by Wild Child Laboratories. Now, one of the affected brands, Ultra Violette, is suing Wild Child for seven million dollars over what it's calling "misleading"  and deceptive conduct. The case is a little up in the air though because Wild Child actually went into liquidation in August, meaning the company is being wound up. Before that, its assets were sold to a new company run by the same CEO. But that company is firmly denying it was set up to avoid responsibility.OPALSIn a game that came right down to the siren, the Opals came out on top, working their way into a quarter final at the FIBA World Cup, with a 20-point lead at three quarter time, it looked like an Aussie win was in the bag. But the Italians slowly chipped away at the margin, equalising with a minute to go. Borlace, who nabbed 30 points, put the Aussies up by two in the final seconds. But a lay-up by Italian Francesca Pasa rolled off the rim after the final siren sounded. The Opals will now face Spain in the quarter finals.  TENNISElena Rybakina has claimed victory in the quarter final of the US Open, and in doing so has claimed the world number one ranking, ending Aryna Sabalenka's 99-week streak at the top! Rybakina will now face Coco Gauff in the semi, who came back from a set down to defeat Mirra Andreeva to earn her spot.FREO PLAYERNow, meet Freo's 'Rocker on the Roof'. Also known as Troy Nababan. This guy has played to thousands of people from 42 metres up in the air on the roof of Perth stadium, but don't worry, he's strapped in. Troy has played at every Docker's home game since 2019, and is now preparing to play to 60,000 Freo fans in the do or die clash against Geelong on Friday night.RECORDS First up, to some impressive new entries that have been added to the Guinness Book of World records, including the world's biggest hair-dryer, the world's tallest horse, and the world's narrowest car. There are also new records set for the largest collection of frog related items, and the largest collection of My Little Pony memorabilia.  WATER PING-PONG Now to space, specifically China's Tiangong Space station. Where these astronauts are playing ping pong with a glob of water! Well, playing might be the wrong word. They're being very gentle with it. They recorded this video as part of a space lecture, to teach students about the mechanics of fluid in the microgravity of space.Posted Thu 10 Sep 2026 at 5:17pmThu 10 Sep 2026 at 5:17pmThu 10 Sep 2026 at 5:17pm, updated Thu 10 Sep 2026 at 11:29pmThu 10 Sep 2026 at 11:29pmThu 10 Sep 2026 at 11:29pmShareFacebookX (formerly Twitter)Back to top
