Description

The Texas star had joked about an AI-generated video that depicted Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian slapping Rowe, a college football reporter for ESPN

Summary

The incident highlights the growing societal challenge of AI-generated misinformation and deepfakes being used to depict physical violence against real individuals. While the article focuses on a sports-related controversy, it illustrates how high-fidelity synthetic media can normalize harassment and distort public discourse. The event underscores the importance of media literacy and the ethical responsibilities of public figures when engaging with manipulated content, though it does not directly address catastrophic or existential AI risks.

There is nothing funny about it,” he wrote. “It’s easy to say I didn’t mean it, but I know my words and actions were hurtful to a lot of people. Let’s go, Texas fight!” before adding “Hook ’Em!” and walking off. A Texas spokesperson said ESPN’s technical difficulties played a role in Sarkisian’s response.Manning, the nephew of former NFL stars Peyton and Eli, is in his fourth season at Texas. The Longhorns came back from a 20-point deficit to beat the Buckeyes on Saturday and are the No 1 team in the country entering the third week of the season.Explore more on these topicsCollege footballCollege sportsUS sportsUS sports medianewsShareReuse this content
