Summary
This formal petition to the Australian House of Representatives advocates for a nationwide ban on generative AI tools, citing the significant environmental impact of data centers on Australia's water security. The petitioners highlight that AI infrastructure could demand up to 25% of Sydney's drinking water supply by 2035, presenting a resource-based threat to national stability. While the petition focuses on environmental sustainability rather than algorithmic alignment, it represents growing public concern regarding the physical externalities of frontier AI deployments within the Australian regulatory landscape.
Body
Artificial Intelligence
I want to ban generative AI across all of Australia to help preserve water and support our country. The ban includes but is not limited to, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity AI, and all other generative AI websites, apps, and tools.
Statistics to support the ban:
Each ChatGPT query consumes roughly 5-10 millilitres of water
In 2025, AI data centers in Australia are predicted to consume a significant amount of water, with estimates suggesting that by 2035, they could demand 25% of Sydney's annual drinking water supply
It takes roughly 12 Liters to generate one AI image on chatGPT
We therefore ask the House to consider banning most, if not all Generative AI in Australia or at least Victoria, as we are risking our future as a country for AI tools and equipment.
