Body

Artificial Intelligence Artificial intelligence platforms, and the data centres that power them, are being adopted rapidly across government and business. Data centres already use about 2 per cent of the national grid, projected to triple by 2030, and some facilities have sought up to 40 million litres of water a day. The largest AI and cloud platforms are owned by multinational corporations whose tax contribution in Australia is modest relative to the resources they draw on. Because these platforms are controlled offshore, Australia's access to technologies its economy and government depend on could be restricted by a foreign government or by commercial arrangements Australia does not control. There is growing public concern that oversight, infrastructure costs, environmental impacts, tax fairness and sovereign access are not keeping pace, and that the public and Australian-owned businesses have too little say in decisions that will shape the nation for a generation. We therefore ask the House to commission an urgent, independent review of Australia's AI, data centre and taxation policy. We ask that the review examine the governance and data use of AI platforms and the risk that a foreign government could determine Australia's access to them; the energy, water, land and infrastructure impacts of data centres and who pays for them; and the taxation of multinational AI and cloud providers. We ask that it weigh the interests of government, the public and Australian-owned businesses equally, proceed transparently with published submissions and a public report, and guard against undue multinational lobbying. from 77 citizens (Petition No. EN10191)
