QUESTION
Could the Minister please advise on the following: Is Treasury using any artificial intelligence [AI] system/s to assess submissions from the public and organisations, and if so: please detail all systems in use including the architecture/technique and functional role of the AI systems in use, for example large language models and/or generative AI; where is the data/information used by the AI systems stored, is that information held onshore or in servers overseas. Can Treasury define what type of AI systems are in use (algorithmic systems or advanced automation, etcetera). Do these systems have human oversight, and if so: how many people; and please detail their qualifications and experience. How has Treasury informed Australian citizens that their data, information and submissions are being assessed by AI tools. How often does Treasury run quality assurance checks on the systems. Has Treasury coordinated with other departments on the deployment of AI, and if so, which ones. What checks and balances are in place to ensure that the AI systems are operating fairly and effectively.
ANSWER
Senator the Hon Katy Gallagher: The Treasurer - The Hon Jim Chalmers MP has provided the following answer to the Honourable Senator's question as follows: Treasury utilises endorsed enterprise AI tool, Microsoft 365 Copilot, to assist with preliminary analysis of submissions. Treasury advises participants in consultation processes that submissions may be supported by AI-assisted analysis; and all submissions are reviewed by Treasury staff. This approach is reflected in Treasury's published Artificial Intelligence transparency statement . Microsoft 365 Copilot is a generative artificial intelligence system (GenAI) that produces draft content, summaries and insights based on user prompts. Microsoft 365 Copilot data is processed and stored in Australia, within secure enterprise environments using enterprise-grade data protection controls. Treasury's approach using AI is aligned with the Digital Transformation Agency's policy for the responsible use of AI in government and the Department of Finance's APS AI Plan.
