Summary
This parliamentary petition calls for urgent government action to address environmental risks associated with large-scale industrial projects, specifically identifying data centres as significant consumers of resources in drought-prone regions. While the document primarily focuses on climate change and fossil fuel divestment, it highlights the growing friction between the physical infrastructure requirements of frontier AI systems and national resource security. The petition reflects emerging public concern regarding the environmental footprint of the compute hardware necessary for advanced AI, though it does not directly address catastrophic AI safety or governance of the models themselves.
Body
EN10433
The climate crisis is a real and imposing danger to Australia, with data centre projects being placed in already drought prone areas across Australia, with Europe on fire, with Canada on fire, with the UK experiencing drought and record breaking heat recorded across the globe, it is only a matter of time before things get even worse in Australia, with a record breaking El Nino predicted to land soon. Australians deserve to be protected by their government from corporations that take the resources of our beautiful land and destroy our wildlife and ruin our economy in the process. Instead, our government cozies up with these people with promises of jobs and donations. Enough is enough. We need our government to take proper, meaningful climate action, not in 2030, not in 2050, we need it now. Today. Yesterday was the time but it's already passed, so we demand the government start making meaningful progress towards the climate crisis and preparing Australia for the increased bushfires, droughts and famine today!
We therefore ask the House to take the climate crisis seriously. Start dismantling and moving away from fossil fuels and CO2 heavy energy and exercises TODAY. No more NetZero sometime in the future, start making actual meaningful action right now. We ask the House to say NO to Data Centers, to mining billionaires and to start actually caring about the planet we live on and the beautiful country that is Australia being needlessly killed by the 'Drill baby Drill' mindset.
