Description

Almost forty per cent of federal government agencies duty-bound to produce an AI transparency statement missed the February deadline, in a blow to Canberra's efforts to build public trust in its use of the technology. The nearly 100 agencies mandated under the mandatory transparency standard faced a Friday deadline to publish their statements, setting out how they use and manage AI.As of Monday, 55 non-corporate Commonwealth entities required to publish their statements after a six-month grace period had done so, leaving a further 37 remaining.

Summary

Federal government efforts in Australia to enhance AI transparency have hit a snag, with nearly 40% of mandated agencies failing to meet the February deadline for submitting AI transparency statements. This represents a challenge to building public trust in governmental AI use and management. The initiative involved 100 agencies, highlighting the significance of transparency in AI governance as part of Australia's broader approach to managing AI-related risks. The missed deadline underscores potential gaps or challenges in implementing AI oversight mechanisms in governmental institutions, relevant both to Australian context and discussions on global AI governance.
