Description
A new centre has been stood up in Defence to coordinate AI policy development and scale its use of the technology in line with a responsible AI policy that deviates from the rest of the public service. The centre comes as Defence continues work on its AI strategy that extends to workforce capability, chief data integration officer Paul Robards told InnovationAus.com in an interview. A small number of permanent staff in the Defence data division are now working at the centre, which also draws on existing expertise from experts across the land, sea, air, space and cyber domains.
Summary
Australia's Defence department has established a 'hub and spoke' AI centre to enhance the coordination of AI policy development and implementation. This initiative is part of Defence's AI strategy focused on responsibly scaling the use of AI technology. The centre will utilize expertise across various domains including land, sea, air, space, and cyber, reflecting a unique approach compared to other public service sectors. This development is significant for Australian AI policy as it signals a dedicated effort to integrate AI capabilities with national defence priorities, potentially setting a precedent for other sectors addressing AI safety and strategic governance.
