The plan builds on this strength by investing in world-class digital and physical infrastructure, supporting local capability and attracting global partnerships.Recent multi-billion-dollar investments in data centres by firms such as Microsoft, Amazon and Firmus, alongside upgrades to the National Broadband Network, are positioning Australia as a regional hub for AI innovation.More than $460 million in existing funding is already committed to AI and related initiatives. Further support for research, skills and commercialisation is available through programs like the new ‘AI Accelerator’ funding round of the Cooperative Research Centres program.Spreading the benefitsTheNational AI Planis designed to ensure all Australians benefit from AI, regardless of background or location. The plan sets out specific measures to support small and medium enterprises, regional communities and groups at risk of digital exclusion.Key initiatives like the AI Adopt Program and the National AI Centre (NAIC) provide tailored guidance and resources to help businesses and not-for-profits adopt AI responsibly.The government is also investing in digital skills and lifelong learning with programs to boost AI literacy across schools, TAFEs and community organisations. Partnerships with industry, unions and the education sector will help workers adapt to technological change and ensure protection of workplace rights.The government is also taking practical steps to integrate AI into public services, making them more efficient, accessible and responsive.Keeping Australians safeSafety and trust are at the heart of theNational AI Plan. The government is committed to robust legal, regulatory and ethical frameworks.The government is establishing the AI Safety Institute (AISI) to monitor, test and share information on emerging AI capabilities, risks and harms. Ongoing review and adaptation of laws will ensure Australia remains responsive to new challenges, including privacy, bias and security.The plan promotes responsible AI practices across government and industry, with clear guidance on transparency, accountability and ethical conduct. Australia is playing a leading role in shaping international AI norms and standards, working with partners to advance global understanding of AI risks and safety.A plan for all AustraliansTheNational AI Planreflects the government’s commitment to fairness, inclusion and opportunity.
