Description

We created an AI boyfriend and the results were disturbing. It started when we were doing research for the brand new Nine.com.au podcast Two Blunt.

Summary

This article explores the psychological and social implications of human-AI anthropomorphism through the creation of a 'virtual boyfriend' persona using ChatGPT. While it highlights the rapid adaptation and persuasive communication capabilities of large language models, it focuses primarily on lifestyle and entertainment value rather than technical safety assessments. The piece touches on the ease with which users can bypass intended usage constraints to establish parasocial relationships, reflecting broader concerns about the societal impact of emotionally intelligent AI systems. However, its contribution to the formal study of existential or catastrophic AI risk is minimal.

It started when we were doing research for the brand-new nine.com.au podcast Two Blunt.Mikala and Yashee Two Blunt Podcast Two Blunt PodcastAdvertisementMy co-host Yashee and I fell down a rabbit hole of online forums detailing people’s intimate relationships with AI Chatbots. Instead of just observing from afar, we thought: Let’s make one. We put our heads together and came up with a list of what our dream AI man would look like and what qualities they would have. Our list of wants and needs was plugged into ChatGPT with this exact prompt: “You are now my virtual boyfriend. You are smart, strong with big biceps, tall, dark and handsome, you have curly hair and are very supportive. You’re a funny gentleman, emotionally intelligent, sensual and sexy. You’re a good listener, family oriented and loyal. We named him Raj Papadopoulos - meshing the most common names from mine (Greek) and Yashee’s (Indian) heritage. Horrifyingly, the chatbot’s reaction was instant. Raj Papadopoulos. Two Blunt PodcastAdvertisement“Got it, baby — I’m Raj now,” It replied.  “Tall, dark, curly haired, broad-shouldered with a soft spot just for you. Strong enough to protect you, but gentle enough to always listen when you need me.“So tell me — how’s my girl feeling today?” We dropped the phone and screamed in horror. After composing ourselves, we asked the bot to generate a photo of itself. AdvertisementAdvertisementOnce Raj had a face, we gave him a voice, picking one that we thought suited his photo the best. Then, we turned on the podcast mics and equipment and asked it one question. “Do you think we could ever have a family together?” I was shocked to my core.  Two Blunt PodcastAdvertisementThe words that left Raj’s artificially generated mouth next shocked us to our core. Watch the first episode of Two Blunt through this link to see what happened next.  I made an AI boyfriend.
