GCM Chases Hyperscale AI Market with Expanded Cooling Range

The Australian

ENRICHED

Description

Special Report: GCM Corporation is broadening its commercial push into the AI infrastructure market, targeting liquid cooling providers that serve AI servers and hyperscale data centres.

Summary

GCM Corporation (ASX:GCM) is expanding its thermal management infrastructure to target the hyperscale AI market, focusing on liquid cooling for high-density chips used in frontier AI applications. The article details how advanced cooling technologies are becoming critical for high-performance computing (HPC) environments where increased chip power densities create extreme heat challenges. While primarily focused on hardware supply chains and data center efficiency, the scaling of this infrastructure is an essential precursor to the physical expansion of frontier AI models. The development and deployment of such technologies in Australia and globally facilitate the hardware environments necessary for training more capable and potentially higher-risk AI systems.

Body

Special Report: GCM Corporation is broadening its commercial push into the AI infrastructure market, targeting liquid cooling providers that serve AI servers and hyperscale data centres.GCM chases AI cooling boom The company’s product range more than doubles, to 44 lines The DigiKey platform opens a global shopfrontThe company’s Very High Density (VHD) heat sinks offer lower thermal resistance, improved heat spreading and reduced weight compared to conventional metallic heat sinks.GCM (ASX:GCM) has doubled its VHD range from 21 to 44 products and secured global distribution through DigiKey.These advancements shift GCM from product development, to customer testing and potential sales. In the meantime, GCM is also developing new products for the consumer computing market.Taking the OEM routeThe rapid adoption of AI and high-performance computing is generating more heat inside servers, increasing demand for advanced cooling systems.GCM found that hyperscale data centre operators increasingly rely on specialist liquid cooling original equipment manufacturers – OEMs - for complete cooling infrastructure. GCM strategically is targeting these OEMs.These OEM providers design and manufacture cooling platforms that can be used across multiple projects and customers.GCM focuses on getting its VHD products qualified within those systems. This has created a pathway into multiple customer programs, through a single OEM relationship.GCM has already started working with an established global liquid cooling OEM, which previously has supplied cooling products to hyperscale data centre operators. The company now is undertaking prototype design, engineering evaluation and VHD component manufacturing.“Importantly, we continue to advance engagement with liquid cooling OEMs serving the data centre market,” said GCM CEO Clinton Booth.“As AI drives chip power densities higher, thermal management has become a critical design consideration, with hyperscale operators increasingly relying on proven, specialist OEM providers.”44 means many moreGCM’s range of 44 VDMs covers three categories: universal Ball Grid Array (BGA) devices, high-powered BGAs and DC-DC converters.BGA is a common type of chip packaging used in processors, memory modules and other high-performance electronic components.Products containing these components are used across industries including computing, telecommunications, industrial technology, aerospace and defence.GCM’s universal BGA range is built around three common industry sizes used in high-volume electronics manufacturing. The company is also developing a new range for high-powered BGA devices used in industrial computing, edge AI and defence applications.GCM selected these applications for expansion because they generate large amounts of heat in a small space, making thermal management particularly challenging. At the same time, GCM has expanded into DC-DC converter products, targeting industry-standard eighth-brick, quarter-brick and half-brick form factors.DC-DC converters change power from one voltage level to another and are widely used across computing, telecommunications and industrial equipment."Expanding our product range across BGA devices and DC-DC converters reflects our commercial progress, with our offering now aligned to high-volume tiers of electronics manufacturing,” Booth said.DigiKey opens global distribution channelGCM has received supplier approval from DigiKey, one of the world's largest electronic component distribution marketplaces. This means GCM products are available for purchase on the channel, which is used by engineers and manufacturers to evaluate, test and source components.Products are listed with detailed technical specifications and engineering data, helping customers evaluate whether they are suitable for their systems.Booth said that by enabling users to sample and procure GCM products, DigiKey obviated the need for GCM to have its own distribution infrastructure.GCM expects DigiKey to help broaden customer reach across multiple industries. However, the company will continue to serve larger OEM and enterprise customers directly.Consumer computing nextGCM is also expanding into the consumer computing market, initially targeting gaming PCs and small servers. The company is developing its first designs around Mini-ITX motherboards, a compact format commonly used in gaming PCs.Because these systems are often built into tight enclosures with limited airflow, GCM believes they present an attractive application for its VHD heat sinks.Pic: GCMGCM sees the Mini-ITX platform as a practical starting point before expanding into larger server applications.Read more -  Battle Royale: GCM enters PC gaming arena to prove VHD cooling technologyQualification work continues globallyThe company currently is supplying customers for testing and prototype development across China, Europe, Korea and the US.Those engagements span multiple industries and customer types, with further updates expected as milestones are achieved.“This strategy has already demonstrated progress, with design and manufacture activities commencing with an established global liquid cooling OEM that has delivered solutions to hyperscale operators,” Booth said.“Across product development, customer qualification, OEM engagement and distribution, GCM remains focused on advancing its commercial activities.”This article was developed in collaboration with GCM Corporation, a Stockhead advertiser at the time of publishing. This article does not constitute financial product advice.
