Only drones,” the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) quotes a captured Russian soldier as saying.“I saw them [Ukrainian soldiers] only when I surrendered. Only drones, and there are lots and lots of them. Guys, don’t come. It’s a drone war.”It could soon become a clash of terminators.“We just launch it and we know everything will be dead – everything that will be found there in this particular area will be dead,” Kokhanovskyy said, describing the effect of AI-brained hunter-killer quadcopters.“There is no connection to the drone at all, you cannot see the video, nothing … Everything it sees will be killed.”Guided missiles have long been autonomous. They are fired at a human designated target (a building, bunker, ship or aircraft). They fly to the target. They detonate.Now, AI can choose a target by itself.“AI significantly enhances specific functions, such as drone footage analysis and target recognition, target tracking, and autonomous navigation, including last-mile navigation and sound and text analysis for intelligence extraction,” CSIS analyst Kateryna Bondar writes in a recent report. Quadcopters are the obvious first step.Modular components are already being built to repurpose commercial drones into weapons with specific tasks. Now it’s developing bolt-on, modular AI.“Ukraine’s defence industry is developing stand-alone AI-driven software that can be integrated across various platforms to expand battlefield autonomy,” Bondar states.“It comes in stand-alone modules, consisting of compact chips with embedded software and sometimes cameras.
